A signage system designed to encourage stakeholder participation; where primary school children learnt about signage by working on it. A project designed to intellectually, creatively and emotionally engage the community from inception.
Developing a signage system for BIS Junior School, required us to look at the exercise through a different lens. The predominant stakeholders were children between the ages of 6-11 who are normally passive observers of signage, more so in a familiar surroundings.
Our challenge was to find a design solution that helped the children understand the concept of signage and raise their collective consciousness towards the physical additions to their environment.
We thought the best way forward was to engage the students in the creative process, giving them a sense of ownership and educating them about the principals of signage at the same time.
The design team at rgd, developed an experiential concept that could involve the children - intellectually and creatively. Together with the art faculty, and school leadership, we held a series of design workshops with the kids, where students got understand the importance of signage, and were encouraged to author and co–own their own.
This collaboration provided experiential and emotional links with the signage, resulting in a design product that users love and are proud to own.
